Summary
The party broke camp and continued toward Everdale for the King’s Tourney. Odine Dunmere was shaken by the corrupted horse from the previous day because she has seen the same pestilence in the Thornwood Vale, where it affects animals, plants, and people. The horse suggested to her that the entity’s malignant curse is spreading beyond the Vale. While speaking with Cassian, her sleeve slipped enough for him to notice black tentacle-like lines on her arm, similar to the corruption on the horse. He also noticed that her violet pendant is important to her, but he did not press her about it.
As the road climbed toward Everdale, the party saw the city, the Gleaming Keep, and the massive festival grounds below it. Cassian explained what he knew of the city: the Empty Throne has remained unclaimed since King Aldrich, and the Oathkeepers guard the keep, throne, city, and tournament while the noble houses compete for status and influence. The King’s Tourney is the city’s great yearly event and the economic heart of the surrounding settlement.
Jevon guided the party into the King’s Tourney, then left them to enjoy themselves. Virellan Le’Strange, a flamboyant bard and observer, greeted the group and introduced Aldrich to Minnie, who sold him a bottle of huckleberry mead made from berries harvested near the Thornwood Vale.
The party reached the registration tent, where Cassian recognized the white armor and banner of House Godran, a wealthy and magically powerful noble house associated with mana crystals, artifacts, and ruthless ambition. Holt, the registrar, signed the party into the Proving Grounds for a 25 gold group fee. They registered under the name Cassian’s Crushing Crusaders and were told to report to Tent D on the following in-game day at 6 PM.
After registration, Cassian led the group to Slug’s cookhouse. Odine was horrified by the open preparation of meat, but Slug found food she could tolerate and served the others smoked pork and mead. While eating, the party noticed Kardis Wulfhelm, prince of House Wulfhelm, enter with a black-armored companion. Aldrich recognized House Wulfhelm as the parent house of the vassal house he once served. Cassian knew the Wulfhelms won last year’s tournament and currently hold the title and deed to the Thornwood Vale.
The group then visited Marea Voss, an apothecary. Cassian haggled her into selling four healing potions for 38 gold total, split between him and Odine. Aldrich bought a Traveler’s Tonic. When Odine mentioned the pestilence ravaging her home, Marea warned her to seek true sources and be wary of people exploiting misinformation about the pestilence.
Outside, Azrith found Jevon’s magical box buried in muddy cart tracks. A small boy said Jevon dropped it when black-armored knights took him. Away from Jevon, the box still glowed, but much more dimly. The party withdrew from the crowd to discuss what to do. Cassian warned that interfering with guards or noble soldiers could be dangerous, but Odine insisted they needed to help Jevon. The session ended with the group planning to split up for short errands, then meet again at sundown. Odine intended to study the box and see whether it could help locate Jevon, while Aldrich wanted to find a smithy.
